So, you have decided that you want to start your own business, and think that a franchise concept might be the perfect way to start off in a business for yourself, but not by yourself.  Well, the first step is look at YOURSELF to see if you have a franchisee personality.   Your personality traits and characteristics might be great indicators how successful you are going to be as a franchisee.  Here are some important factors to consider before launching into a search for franchise opportunities:

  1.  Are you comfortable working within established structures and guidelines?  Franchises are built on proven systems and have structures and guidelines that franchisees must abide by.  In order to be a happy and successful franchisee you need to be comfortable working within the established rules of the franchisor.

  1. Are you willing to put in the hours?  Like anyone opening their own business, you need to be committed to working whatever hours are needed to get the job done, especially in the beginning.  Starting a franchise is no different than any other business in this respect, and in most cases, you can’t expect that an 8am-5pm schedule will be sufficient to get your business off the ground.

  1. Are you a mixer and a shaker?  While most franchise systems have targeted marketing strategies and campaigns that they run nationally, you will still need to market your concept locally.  Successful franchisees are active in the communities that they serve and are constantly networking and promoting their local business.

Franchises offer great opportunities with proven companies, but it is important to look at yourself as well as the franchise concept to ensure that you are giving yourself the best opportunity to succeed.
